Active Listening with the WPBE and friends ( the worst PSA ever)
Jazz has always been a music that requires active listening from the musicians and audience. This is because, with Jazz's improvisatory nature, even if you know the tune, you don't know how the music will evolve while you're playing it, since everyone is actively contributing ideas. To help demonstrate the idea of active listening in jazz, I asked a few of my favourite musicians, one at a time, to contribute a 4 bar phrase to a musical conversation. I didn't give any other instruction other than the topic of discussion would be a 12 bar blues in F. The rest was up to them to listen and react based on what was said by the others before them. In these challenging times, we could stand to have more active listeners, so that we can have meaningful discussions about important matters. Thanks to all the musicians, if you're interested please check out their various solo and band projects on Bandcamp and the streaming sites. I've listed just a few The Musicians in Order of Appearance: Drew Birston - bass @drewbirston Sultans of String, Amanda Martinez Tim Shia - drums, editing @worstpopband Worst Pop Band Ever, Shiverbeck Kevin Barrett - guitar @kevinbarrett the Special Interest Group Chris Gale - tenor sax, vox @crpgale Hector Michael Herring - bass @dangerherring Peripheral Vision, Way North Rebecca Hennessy - trumpet @rebeccajhennessy Fog, Makeshift Island Donne Roberts - guitar @donne_roberts African Guitar Summit Allison Au - alto sax @allisonaumusic Allison Au Quartet Adrean Farrugia - piano @adreanfarrugia Ricochet, Faruggia and Frahm www.worstpopbandever.com @worstpopband www.facebook.com/worstpopbandever https://www.ppfhouse.com/jazz-4-jrs/
